My Leap Year: Small Steps 20-21
[My Leap Year is a 12-month life project (begun 11/01/07) at the end of which I intend to be writing full-time. 365 small steps = 1 giant leap.]

Like the fancy new counter? I worked it up after reading this intriguing post by Kevin Kelly, the founding executive editor of Wired magazine (among other things–I recommend a visit to his very interesting website).
I didn’t write or post at all yesterday, and none of you pestered me. Where’s the accountability?
Of course, I didn’t write today, either. Except for those first two days, I’m having a real tough time with these early mornings. I’ve observed in the past that, left to my own devices, I tend to write most naturally between 2 and 6 in the afternoon. But my shifts at work either end at 6 or start at 2, so obviously that won’t work. As I was thinking the situation over in the shower this morning (I do a lot of great thinking in the shower), I remembered another passage from the same John Rogers interview I referred to a couple weeks ago:
“Some scripts seem to write better in different parts of the day. I’ve had two movies that just refused to show up on the page until after 9 at night. I hate those, but there’s nothing you can do about it. You just know that your subconscious is doing this for a reason, and you dig in. However, I still put in the hours on those pages, just at a different time.
“That didn’t use to bother me, but I have to admit — I hit forty this year, and that’s beginning to beat the hell out of me when it happens.”
If our subconscious assigns certain times of day to certain projects, then maybe part of my problem is not choosing morning projects. Of course, even if this is true I don’t think there’s a way to discover which projects are morning projects other than to get up every morning and write until something clicks. Which is what I’d be doing anyway.
Day off tomorrow. Must. Produce. Pages.

I’m not then nagging type, I hate it when my mom pesters me to do ANYTHING!
But I also recognize that sometimes we need a pester in our lives.
Prem, I totally agree. Most of the time being nagged to do something almost assures I won’t do it! But in the case of this week, I did openly solicit pesters.
OK. I’m paying attention so you better get your butt in gear. ;)
Caleb,
You’ve always worked better in the afternoon or evenings. That doesn’t mean that you can’t get anything done in the AM, it just means it will take some extra motivation or a new approach.
Some ideas:
1. A nap after work then 1 Hr writing time
2. Kiss Erin good-night then write for 1 Hr and sleep an hour later in the morning.
3. Write during breakfast and lunch. Keep supper sacred.
4. Get to work 1 Hr. early. Find a place nearby where you can write then go to work….
You can do this!!!!
You should be reading this:
One Bird at a Time by Anne Lamott
All good suggestions.
I actually have that book (you gave it to me), but it’s back home in LA and, alas, has not been read yet.
